Cosmic Academy

Introduction

The Cosmic Academy originally started as an early childhood development center for children aged 2 to 5 years old. It has gradually extended to include junior primary classes over the last year. It is located on a 4 acre plot of land in Amafro, a developing suburb of Accra, just near the main road leading to Cape Coast

The center currently has 60 children from the surrounding neighborhoods and communities. Nursery, KG and primary level classes are provided for the children during the weekdays.

Who do we need?

Volunteers – both genders fine – who have a heart and special patience for young children, and have the motivation to teach nursery and KG level activities.

In September 2008, Cosmic will be having computers installed. Volunteers with computer skills are needed to help with the computer program.

Project Manager

This early childhood development center was established by a career teacher, Jayaliila, who spent several years teaching in other schools before finally opening a center of her own called the Cosmic Academy.

The volunteer coordinator who will communicate with you as you book and plan your journey is Matthew Squire from Canada.

Accommodation

The Cosmic Academy is simple, quaint, and gives a taste of true Ghanaian livelihood. Volunteers and guests stay in a comfortable bedroom onsite at the academy. Volunteers should be prepared to share rooms.

As of July 2008, Cosmic Academy now has electricity and running water. Toilets are clean and sanitary squatting style commodes. Be ready to take Ghanaian style bucket baths.

The neighborhood is a mix between a rural and a developing community. It is quiet, but there is easy access to the hustle and bustle of Accra. Less than 30 minutes away is the economical beach resort Krokobite Beach.
